Here are some useful English vocabulary football words and  phrases that you might find useful. Football is truly  (really) an international language. When it comes to  (when it arrives) the World  Cup even those individuals who normally do not watch games will be glued to  (watching  enthusiastically) their TV screens. The tournament  (competition) is well under way  (has begun) and  the excitement is building.  Thirty two teams qualified for the final stages  (the last part of the competition) after more than two  years of qualifying matches in various regions  (zones) all over the world. These teams came together  and the competition kicked off  (started) on the 15th June 2018. The qualifiers were divided in to eight  groups of four teams (4 teams in each group A- H). The teams were seeded  (separated/divided) so  that all the best teams could not be drawn  (placed) together in the same group. There were four  seedings 1-4. This draw took place in December 2017so everyone has known for several months which  teams they would play. Every team has now played the other three tea ms in its group. So each team  has three matches  (games) and the top two teams in each group qualify for the next stage (part/round) of the competition. Is Global Warming Making Us Sick Photo Via: http://static1.squarespace.com Global warming an issue that many still choose to ignore and that others aren’t sure how to deal with is largely human-made, and according to a new federal government report, it’s making Americans sick and seems to be progressively getting worse. On April 4, a report (332 pages in total) was issued by the Obama administration that claimed global warming will “make the air dirtier, water more contaminated and food more tainted,” according to NBC news. This report also warned Americans of numerous diseases, including those spread by ticks and mosquitoes. It also warned of longer allergy seasons and heat wave deaths in the thousands. The Environmental Protection Agency chief, Gina McCarthy, also warns that these climate changes can also affect people’s mental health. As she said at the White House event in which the report was unveiled, “It’s not just about polar bears and melting ice caps. It’s about our families. It’s about our future.” The Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy, agrees, claiming climate change affects people in many more ways than doctors may have initially thought (based on past circumstances). He claimed the report would allow doctors to quantify, “the sheer number of pathways through which climate affects health.” Murthy continued on the dangers of global warming in saying, “Not being able to breathe is one of the most frightening experiences. We’re talking about scary moments for parents and children.” Air pollution will be worsened by power plants, pollen and wildfires, which will likely lead to the above mentioned breathing problems. Asthma, the number one cause of hospitalized children, will worsen due to heat, allergens and air pollution according to Lynn Goldman, dean of George Washington University’s public health school. The heat will also lead to other problems according to White House science adviser, John Holdren. Holdren highlighted heat waves and said that even with a reduction in emissions of heat-trapping gases on a global scale, there will be thousands to tens of thousands of heat-related deaths in the summer in the U.S. annually. Computer simulations projected by the centers of disease control and prevention forsaw extra summer heat deaths in 209 cities. These deaths will be outweighed by fewer winter cold deaths from the same climate change according to the CDC’s Shubhayu Saha, the lead author on a study. The science adviser, Holdren, said this report is based on over 1,800 published, scientific studies and new federal research. He also said the report was reviewed by the National Academies of Sciences, making it a very reliable, accurate accumulation of the data. Howard Frumkin, dean of the University of Washington’s public health school, was not a part of the report, but supports its data. In a statement about the report, he said, “the report clearly establishes that climate change is a major threat to public health in the United States. There is a vast disconnect between the magnitude of the problem, as outlined by this report, and the response of government health agencies,” he said. According to Frumkin, the government hasn’t been doing nearly enough. So while the data is accurate, and the threat is real, our capability of protecting ourselves from it, from actually reversing the outcome and fixing the problem, is slim for the time being. For now, the best we can do is to remain educated as to what’s going on in our environment and do our part to “go green,” to the best of our abilities. This means using less water when we brush our teeth or take showers, carpooling whenever possible, and avoiding use of plastic water bottles etc. While the contributions are certainly small at best, they’re also helping to lessen the dangerous outcomes later on. If global warming is indeed making Americans sick, it only makes sense to do our part to avoid this problem in the future.

Image via  https://openclipart.org This is pretty obvious, but it’s a good one. You should be aware that it’s crucial to give employers several ways to contact you. What you might not know is that it’s actually optional to include your physical home address on your resume. If you are wary about giving out such relatively sensitive information, you can leave this out (but you should still include your email address and phone number, of course). However, my friend stated that many employers view applicants who include their home address as more open than those who don’t, so you should weigh any discomfort over sharing this information with that. 2.)  DO strategically leave out information. Image via  http://3.bp.blogspot.com Okay, so this might not be padding as much as taking away, but unlike with choosing not to include your home address, this can actually add value to your resume rather than detract. For instance, if your GPA is less than 3.0, you should take it off of your resume. Use your judgment and do the same for information that’s not mandatory and may be less than flattering. 3.)  DO include an Objective, but only if it’s tailored to each job. On the other hand, if you are not going to make the effort or are looking for a variety of jobs, you should leave the “Objective” section off of your resume so you don’t box yourself out of a job. 4.)  DO include skills that show you are tech savvy. Image via  http://images.universityherald.com First of all, every resume should have a “Skills” section (and it should come after the “Work Experience” segment), but even more importantly is what you include in it. My career counselor friend recommends to use this area to showcase that you’re tech savvy, and the more obvious you are about it, the better. Dont assume employers automatically know that you have at least basic skills. For instance, when detailing the software you are proficient in, even listing obvious software like Microsoft Word and Excel is a great idea. This will allow employers looking for this experience to know right away that you are proficient in it, which will bump your resume up the list. Don’t believe me? Take this as proof: my friend was explicitly told that she was almost passed over for a job because, despite being very capable with Microsoft Excel, her employers (who were specifically looking for someone with advanced Excel skills) couldn’t tell her level of proficiency from her resume. She was lucky enough to get an interview where she could explain her talents with Excel, and she did eventually land the job. However, that just goes to show that you should be very obvious when showcasing your tech capabilities on a resume. As a side note, if you want to list your typing speed as one of your skills, anything above 50 words per minute is acceptable to include, but you should leave off anything below that. 5.)  DO list a “Volunteer Experience” section. Image via  http://www.cetghana.org/ This segment, in which you list the volunteer positions you’ve performed, is valuable because “it shows [you’re] intrinsically motivated to help people and not just doing an activity for financial compensation,” my friend said. However, like the rest of the resume, be sure to follow the length rules (under the ‘Don’t’ section below this) for this segment. 6.)  DO put the “Education” section first on a resume (after the Objective, if included). Image via  http://3.bp.blogspot.com Although I’m listing this tip last under the Do tips, your “Education” experience, in which you list where and when you graduated from college or your other secondary education experience, should either be the first thing on the resume or after the “Objective” section (if you are including one). This is because the employment rate for people with a degree is higher, so this immediately makes the student a more competitive candidate. The Don’ts: 7.)  DON’T list a skill you can’t back up. But only if you CAN actually do it. (Image via MusicMonkay.deviantart.com) A hiring manager at one internship during my college career made this very clear: a person is allowed to exaggerate their skills a little in an interview or on a resume, but they better make sure they’ve learned what they claimed they can already do by the time the job starts. If you can’t deliver on the skills youve put down on your resume, it really doesn’t look good. 8.)  DON’T make a resume longer than one page. If you list everything and find that your resume is longer than one page, chances are youre putting down way too much information. To resolve this, take out the oldest entries (such as the earliest work experience) until the resume is one page or slightly less. On the other hand, if you have your Master’s degree, your resume can be two pages. Furthermore, if you have more advanced knowledge such as a PhD, your resume can be three to four pages. 9.)  DON’T include more or less than four to five bullet points for each section. Create a study plan While it might seem a little soon, start studying two to three months before the AP French exam. The more time that you leave for review, the less time you should have to review each day. Consistent repetition is ideal for learning a language. Set aside 30 minutes a day to review a specific grammar subject; for example, agreement, prepositions, and articles. 2. Review important French conjunctions While it’s important to know the basic conjunctions, such as mais (but) and lorsque (when), it’s a good idea to start reviewing those special constructions that will you set you above your peers. Coordinating conjunctions for emphasis: ne…ni…ni (neither…nor) and ou…ou (either…or). Also, pay attention to those special conjunctions that are used with the subjunctive tense, such as quoique (even though). 3.  Practice conjugating regular verbs and commonly occurring irregular verbs Make sure that youre  familiar with the conjugations of the three different verb groups: -er, -ir, and -re.  Also, be sure to you know the conjugations of être and avoir. These are  two verbs that you will encounter when conjugating not only the simple tenses of present, imperfect, and future, but also as a helping verb when writing in the passé composé and plus-que-parfait.
